For a first book, this was pretty good. The story was interesting enough and the characters were fairly likeable. The only thing I didn't really like was the way the main character, Jane, was somewhat incompetent at taking basic safety precautions, especially once she realizes there is a criminal maniac around. For example she forgets to lock her doors, readily accepts a drink from somebody who gives her the creeps, and follows the same creep into his house when there is nobody around. To say more would give away too much of the story, but to present Jane as somebody who is supposed to be a sensible mother of two yet fails to take those basic safety measures made it very hard to get into the story. Like when you're watching a cheesy slasher movie, I kept finding myself thinking "no you dolt! wtf are you doing?!" at many parts of the story which interrupted the flow too much. However, also like a cheesy slasher movie, it was a fun quick story and would be a good choice for a lighthearted read by the pool.

Gnome On The Range Gnome Novel Book 1 edition by Jennifer Zane Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
Zane did an excellent job with this debut book. It was hilarious! I loved it and everything about it from the way it was written to the characters being familiar. The writing in Gnome on the Range was superb in that it just flowed from page to page. One of those books that I would say "I will do laundry after this chapter" "I will make you dinner after this page". I could not put it down. The characters are lovable and realistic. I felt like I knew them all and lived just down the street.
Jane and Ty were fabulous and makes you want to have a relationship just like theirs. Jane works at the only adult store in town and Ty is a hunky fireman. Jane get in many precarious situations and it drives Ty crazy. The silly banter that goes on between them is so refreshing for a relationship and I loved it.
Zack and Bobby are your typical children and Zane delivers them at their best, with no filters at all. Children have a tendency to speak what they think and these two are no exception to the rule. I had me thinking back to when my children were young like that and we had many sweet memories. Thank you for that Jennifer. Anyway, Goldie is a riot and I laughed every time she spoke. She is an elderly woman with the mind of a 30 something and it was hilarious.
I really can't say enough about this amazing book and hope that many will read it. It is a diamond in the rough for sure.
Jane is a fun, quirky character in the Gnome series. I found her to be strong willed, perhaps too impulsive, snarky and willing to be without a man but not overlooking or running away from a good man. This was a quick read, full of entertainment. The mystery portion of the story line was average and predictable. I got more from the interaction with Ty, the hottie, and the other characters in the book than I did from the underlying mystery and evildoer you can spot a mile away. This was more of a 3.5 stars for me but I plan to continue reading with book two. Fair warning for those who blush at talking about sex and toys, there is plenty to go around in this novel. For me, it added to the entertainment!
This was a take it or leave it book in my mind. I enjoyed the light-hearted style of writing and the nature of some of the characters; but the plot, basically a who's the bad guy in the story, and the love affair, were just a little too boring for me . Hints were made of sizzling sex, and even a little bondage talk, but other that the heroine working in her mother-in-laws sex store there was no sizzle to speak of.
Let me put it this way, I spent the day in a hospital waiting room while my husband had some general tests done, and I finished it with all kinds of people coming and going around me and I still never lost track of the story during it all. There just didn't seem to be anything to lose track of in this tale.
How could buying some gnomes at a garage sale turn someone's life upside down so much but it's true. Despite working at her mother-in-law's adult store, Jane's life is fairly boring. But then suddenly she is living near a really hot firefighter as well as has a cowboy Dex who is pursuing her as well. Not to mention all of the near death incidents that have happened to her. Could it be possibly connected in some way to what was found in one of the garden gnomes her sons bought. Is there really someone out there trying to kill her because of it? This is a real funny mystery novel although it's not for the faint of heart/in other words someone searching for a cleanly written mystery series. I however found myself enjoying the book anyway as I really did like the author's writing style which made the book an enjoyable read.
I have had this book on my for about a year and a half, and I don't know why I hadn't read it before now, but I finished it today and absolutely loved it.
Jane has such a normal yet crazy life, that you can't help but laugh with her as she finds herself in strange and/or embarrassing situations time and time again. She's technically a widow, she was in the process of divorcing her cheating husband when he died and works at her mother-in-law's adult 'toy' store while raising her 2 young boys. Luckily her mother-in-law, Goldie, doesn't hold her son's affairs against her and in fact wants her to open herself up again to someone and if that someone happens to be a very hot gorgeous man, so much the better.
So into the store walks hot and gorgeous firefighter Ty Strickland, who also happens to be Jane's new neighbor. Jane's embarrassing situations seems to happen around Ty continually which only leads to sparks flying all over the place.
Gnome on the Range is just a fun read!! There's humor, there's lots of steam, you can even learn a bit about sex toys if you're looking for that and as if that's not enough there's a mystery that needs solving and danger to both Jane and Ty as the case gets deeper and more convoluted.
There's 2 more books in Jennifer Zane's Gnome Novels series, and I am looking forward to reading them.
