Girls on Film An AList Novel Zoey Dean Books Reviews
Girls on Film
Here's a question for all you girls, have you ever thought you found the one, your other half, your prince charming? That's exactly what Anna Percy thought too when she laid her eyes on Ben Birnbaum. Anna wasn't like the other girls Ben was friends with. Anna wasn't rich, stuck-up, or conniving. Anna was moving on from Ben. In the last book, "The A-List", Ben did leave her that one night on New Year's Eve. I think this book is most like the series "The Clique" because they both deal with related issues from the same perspective, girls. The only differences is the characters ages. In "the Clique" the girls are in middle school and in "The A-list series" is about girls who are in High School or going into college.
I believe the most amazing thing about the series is that in every book they keep you updated on everything and everyone. When the new boy, Adam, comes in, they tell you everything about his background. His family, and stories from when he was younger, before he met Anna. I also enjoy reading it because of the suspense. Not scary stuff. Just a lot of questions that take a while to be answered. But the one con about "Girls on Film" is they don't always have the answers. But then again, that's what makes it so good. I do also think that most of the girls in high school probably deal with the same problems as Anna does. Boys, friends, drama, and parents.
Over all, it's a great book. It almost like a guide for girls, but at the same time, it's a story. I do love how it shows how everyone deals with the same situations as anyone in regular high school would be dealing with. Real things like this happen and Zoey Dean tied that in very well. But I'm still wondering, has Susan, Anna's sister, become best friends with Cammie Shepard? Anna's new guy Adam, are they more than just friends? Will Ben ever make it up to Anna for leaving her that night? I guess you're going to have to read it too to find out!
I was looking for something that would lift the "reading binge" that I've been feeling over the past few months. I've been reading a lot of really bad books lately and it's beginning to get me down.
But, I found "Girls on Film" by Zoey Dean to actually be very good! It is a light read- one that you will remember the characters after being introduced once. There are issues with sex, addiction, alcohol and the ever so relatable issue of LOVE. L-O-V-E. When is it true and when is it just lust?
Then, of course, add to this mixture some money and catty girls and you've got yourself "Girls on Film"! Deceit, trust, revenge, discovering your self worth- insecurities and learning who you are (despite what others perceive you to be). Dean carries the weight of all of these life lessons with grace and humor. It is a very easy book to read and lounge to.
Enjoyable.
My only issues were
- They were in school at the beginning of the book- then they were going to hotels and spas and school wasn't mentioned again. Did I miss where they graduated? Because I thought the film was a school project?
- What happened to the other boy?
Good job, Dean- I'll be getting your "adult" fiction in the mail by next week. Hope it's as good as "Girls on Film", but with maybe a little more depth.
If you liked this, try earlier books by Anna Maxted ("Running in Heels", "Getting Over It") or Katherine Marple's "Okay"
Lately a lot of books have come out in the teen genre and few have lived up to the expectations I 've set for them. Zoey Dean's second offering in the A-List series was what I expected it to be - a fun, decent, light read that can be picked up at any time.
The story basically follows Anna Percy, a New York high school socialite that moves out to LA to restart her life with her dad and initially plans to take an internship but after that falls through she ends up having to go to Hollywood High with some characters she met at a celebrity New Years Eve bash. The main pupils Anna has to tangle with are Sam Sharpe (daughter of a famous movie star questioning her sexuality in this book), Cammie Sheppard (Who has some big problem with Anna because her ex-bf is interested in him), Dee Young (Hippie chick whose big secret from the last book is further explored in this one), Adam (A possible love interest for Anna), and a few other minor characters. Oh and readers of the last book, Ben (Annas one night stand/possible love interest) does come back...
This chapter of the A-List life story follows a few days in Anna's life as she works on a movie project with Sam about class and love, deals with her rehab-escaped sisters return, frets about boys, and lands a new internship at her fathers girlfriends business.
While there are a lot of fun twists and turns throughout, the main problems I have with this series are the dialogue and plot development. Dialogue-wise Zoey Dean needs to get a better handle on realistic teen speak, and while understandably she avoids the cliches of Hollywood Valley Girl speech, the text is disjointed and too plain for anyone, especially teenagers to say. Imagine seeing the story read out by actors and actresses and a lot of the dialogue used just seems too formal and unrealistic for people of this age group and time period to be saying. The second problem I have is the length of time the action takes.
Each book generally spans about a week to two weeks which is a ridiculously short time for any deep character and plot development to happen - particularly noted with what happens between Anna and Adam in this book. Of course it is assumed the storylines are cut so short because Dean has set her characters in the second term of grade 12, which is looking to be a foolhardy choice given that the stories are incredibly unrealistic time-wise.
Either way if you like most of the teen fare out there you'll probably enjoy this novel as well, as its not a terrible read and has enough of a decent storyline in it to keep you interested and guessing.
This book was a great read. I enjoyed the plot twists and all the drama that happened in the story.
